Fresh Water Trophy Brown Trout Fly Fishing

South Island - New Zealand

Experienced, Friendly Fly Fishing Guides

Scott Murray, better known as Scott “The Trout” around the world has become famous in his own right as a renowned brown trout fly fishing Guide. As co-owner of the lodge, with his lovely wife, Leya, his years of experience, great sense of humor and skills make him a guide to remember! Because of his reputation, remember to book well in advance. His many repeat guests keep him busy all season long.

Doug Corbett, Head Guide for the lodge, has a personality that never stops.  He has a wonderful sense of humor and the patience of an angel, perhaps due to his gorgeous family of 4 children! And what a superb teacher, for those needing a wee bit of advise. You never feel embarrassed, he simply won't let you. His favorite saying is "ya gotta laugh!"

River Haven Lodge's fly fishing team of Guides, is considered to be one of the friendliest, and most experienced in the country! In River Haven's Guiding Team, all our Guides have years of experience guiding for the Top of the South Island of New Zealand. Their experience and knowledge are beyond measure.

Dave Whitlock said, and I quote; "We are often asked where our favourite place to fish is. That's easy - the south island of New Zealand. It's truly a paradise on earth if you like to breath pure air, connect with friendly, interesting people, be awed by gorgeous scenery, engage in almost any outdoor sport you can think of and catch big, beautiful wild trout. For us, the epicentre of that paradise is with Scott and Leya Murray at their River Haven Lodge. Lots of folks spend a life time looking for paradise ... and it's just a 12 hour flight from Los Angeles!"  Dave Whitlock (below right) added River Haven Lodge to his new book, calling it "One of the Top Ten Destinations to fish for brown trout, in the world!"

"The Ugly Anglers" film crew from France did a special on River Haven Lodge (see shorts on River Haven Lodge Face Book page), due to the exceptional brown trout fly fishing that they experienced while in New Zealand.   Our Guides are  experienced in sighting brown trout, as though they had a type of radar connection with the fish themselves!  They tie their own flies giving you an edge.  Tying flies to match the exact insect stage, is where our Guides shine! You can be assured, River Haven Guides are among the friendliest and most patient, in the country, and they are all non-smokers.

River Haven's high return client base speaks for itself, as our Guide's  friendly personalities, attitude, skills, patience, and knowledge, bring back clients year after year.  All of our Guides have a unique instinct to read the fishery, as well as their client’s desires, and combine them to create a paradise for those that spend time fly fishing at River Haven Lodge.

Our guides skills are unquestionable, but their uncanny ability to convey that knowledge to the client and give that person the edge and confidence to catch the illusive, wily New Zealand brown trout, is where they shine!   River Haven's friendly Guides are hand selected to give you the very best New Zealand brown trout fishery, has to offer.   They have the skill, knowledge and most importantly, the desire to make your day on the river unforgettable!  Don't forget to leave the lodge a photo, for the "Wall of Fame" in RHL bar, and for the web-site gallery!

Our guides are wonderful with the most experienced or novice anglers. It's a life long sport, that will bring you more pleasure that you can imagine!  An good example is Michael Keaton, USA Actor, comes to River Haven Lodge whenever he has time between movies!
